Think Pink

The Strike Me Pink! campaign to raise money for cancer care for the McGrath Foundation is on again – this year on the weekend of Saturday March 21 and Sunday March 22.

Breast cancer strikes randomly and three years ago it struck one of the teams at a Garden Centres of SA centre, so they organised a Strike me Pink! Day to help raise funds. This is the third year that the group have organised this fundraiser and to date they have raised $30,000.

On that day you will be assured of ‘seeing pink’ in your local Garden Centres SA Garden Centre, with staff wearing pink, pink flowers out on special, raffles and other activities to raise funds for the cause.  Some may be offering special prices or prizes to customers wearing pink on the day! So, add some pretty in pink flowers to your garden, choosing from pink Salvias, Daisies, Geraniums, Hebe and Dahlias to name but a few, and part proceeds will be donated to the McGrath Foundation.

Check out where your nearest GCSA member centre is by visiting the ‘Find a Member’ page’ and see what is happening by visiting their Facebook page.

Grow your own

Whether you have never had a go at growing your own vegies, or you are an experienced productive gardener, autumn is the perfect time to plant cool season crops like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, leeks and spinach, as well as the all-season crops like lettuces, rocket, spring onions and silver beet.

Grow garlic as autumn is the time to plant this easy to grow superfood in a sunny position in well-drained soil. Patience is required though as it takes up to eight months before its ready to harvest and make sure to keep your plants mulched and weed free as garlic hates root competition.

Protect new plantings from snails and slugs which love the cooler, moist weather by using pet friendly snail baits, cooper-based snail deterrent sprays, or if you have raised beds, try a permanent installation of copper tape which they hate to cross. The caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly love to dine on brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kale, so protect them by spraying weekly with an organic bio-insecticide like Success Ultra or Dipel or using insect exclusion netting.

South African Stunners – pick of the bunch!

Why not add a Protea or Leucadendron to you garden for colour and beauty in the garden, with the bonus of making very long-lasting cut flowers. There are so many colours and sizes to choose from, however as the bushes can get unsightly when not pruned regularly, so pick their flowers all the time and you will get bunches of flowers for yourself and friends and retain a compact bush.
